Sony’s new 4-color CCD color filter technology for digital cameras
Sony Corporation today introduced a new solution for digital cameras based on the use of CCD matrix with 4-color RGBE (colors Red, Green, Blue + Emerald ? emerald) filter together with a new image processor with such a filter. According to representatives of Sony, the use of such technology, compared with conventional 3-color CCD primary filters, will provide more natural color reproduction of digital cameras, closer in perception to what provides our vision.
A 4-color CCD filter, in which Emerald (E) is added to the usual RGB colors, allows you to halve the number of errors during color conversion and bring the quality of images closer to the natural gamut of colors perceived by human vision. The new processing processor, in addition to better conversion of a 4-color digital image after such a filter, allows to reduce power consumption by about 30% due to more efficient control. Plus, the new 4-color system allows us to talk about the improvement of characteristics such as the speed of shooting and image playback, better reproduction of blue-green and red tones.
In the near future Sony is planning to release new digital cameras based on 4-color CCD color filters and processing processors. Currently, no camera names or release dates have been announced.
