Olight: DuPont’s new brand for OLED displays
By the way, DuPont’s love of giving exotic names to new technologies, by the way, which is celebrating its centenary this year, is well known: it was this company that introduced such neologisms as Teflon, Lycra, Dacron, Kevlar or the well-known nylon into our everyday life. Nor was anyone surprised that DuPont Displays announced the creation of a new brand for their OLED (Organic light emitting diodes) displays. Meet the new brand: Olight. It looks like the company hopes that the word “olite” will catch on along with nylon and kevlar and will firmly enter our dictionaries as a common noun.
The advantages of OLED matrices over the usual LCD panels have been described in our news several times: they are high brightness and contrast, shorter response time (that is, smoother display of moving objects), a larger viewing angle without loss of contrast and the now popular economical power consumption. An additional advantage of such displays is also that there is no need to use additional screen backlighting.
OLED is one of the technologies, patents and intellectual rights for which are owned by DuPont Displays. OLED technology rights are also co-owned to varying degrees by Cambridge Display Technology and Universal Display (patents), Covion and Dow (materials), Vitex (films), RiTdisplay (mass production). In addition, UDC, Sarnoff Labs and Lucent Technologies are partners of Dupont in the development of new generations of OLED displays.
This is what the 2.1-inch 128 x 64 monochrome Olight displays will look like, which will be mass-produced at RiTdisplay in the second half of 2021. In 2021 – 2021, the company intends to launch the production of flexible color Olight displays.
