Intel thinks about release of 865 chipset for single-channel DDR400
According to industry sources, noting the rise in popularity of low-cost system
boards, Intel is discussing
prospects for the release of a chipset with support for single-channel DDR400, 865Light or
865Minus. By and large, replenishing the Springdale line with a “truncated” version of the chipset will not be difficult. However, although such a step may
lead to a tougher price war among chipset developers, will affect
this is only 845PE chipsets.
Currently, some motherboard manufacturers offer quality
“bonus” for motherboards based on 845PE overclocking capability – to support Pentium
4 with 800 MHz system bus. According to rumors, a new chipset for single-channel memory
will support a similar capability. As noted by the board manufacturers,
although the SiS648FX from Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) only supports single channel
DDR400, its sales at the end of April were very high.
Compared to the 865 series chipsets, SiS648FX is 40% cheaper, which brings
the average selling price of motherboards on it is up to the level of 60-70 dollars. Board manufacturers
notice that the price range makes the SiS chipset a popular choice among the system
integrators and they receive additional orders from their customers. As a result,
a lot of attention is paid to the upcoming PT800 from VIA Technologies
– one more chipset supporting single-channel DDR400.
